Admiral Thomas R. Weschler, USN, a native of Erie, PA, and a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, was highly decorated as a veteran of World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired in 1975 after 34 years of duty, and later served as the Director of the Center for Continuing Education. He was also Chairman of the Naval Operations Department for the Naval War College, and became very involved in civic and cultural activities in our state. He is best known to Newporters for his work with the American Sail Training Association and bringing the Tall Ships to Newport on several occasions. He also played a major part in the effort to build the SSV Oliver Hazard Perry, a sailing education vessel.
