The late George Katz, formerly of East Providence, became the first Executive Director of the Big Brothers of Rhode Island, and served as Director of Development for Big Brothers of America for ten years.He traveled extensively throughout the U.S., establishing Big Brother agencies. He worked as a Community Relations Director and fund-raiser for Miriam Hospital, and volunteered with Hospice Care of RI, as well as with the United Way and Jewish Community Center in Providence. He was inducted into the Rhode Island Jewish Hall of Fame for his efforts with youth in teaching, and coaching basketball, football, and baseball.His sons are former WHJJ Radio talk-show host Steve Kass and John Katz, media critic for Rolling Stone Magazine.
