Dr. Hamolsky of Providence was the first full time Physician-In-Chief of Medicine at Rhode Island Hospital and a Professor of Medical Science at Brown University where he helped develop the Brown University Medical School. He was the first Chief Administrative Officer of the Board of Medical Licensure & Discipline for the State of Rhode Island. He retired in 1987 as Physician-in-Chief of the Department of Medicine at both Rhode Island and Women & Infants Hospitals. Dr. Hamolsky was best known in the medical community for discovering the first thyroid blood test while on sabatical in France in 1961. He also volunteered his with with Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island, was a member of many medical associations and had numerous awards named in his honor. In 2013, Dr. Hamolsky was honored for his work by the Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island which awarded him with its annual Human Dignity Award. Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital also planned to hold an ongoing physician’s lecture series in his name.

After his first wife died in 1965, he became a single parent to his three children in an era when that was uncommon. At the same time he also worked as physician in chief at Rhode Island Hospital. Fourteen years later he married again and happily gained another family. He was said to be a loving, generous man with everyone he met and was beloved by his family and collegues alike. Dr. Hamolsky died at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center in Providence in January 2014. He was 92.
